The Empire Bluff Trail is a scenic and accessible hike located in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, just south of the small town of Empire, Michigan.
Trail Experience
The hike starts in a shaded forest of beech, maple, and hemlock trees. The trail is well-marked and gradually climbs about 200 feet in elevation—not too steep, but enough to get your heart rate up. Along the way, hikers pass interpretive signs explaining the area’s glacial history, as well as a few remnants of old farms that once dotted the landscape.
Eventually, the woods thin out and the trail transitions to open dunes. Near the end, a wooden boardwalk leads out to the edge of Empire Bluff, which rises about 400 feet above the shoreline. From here, you’re treated to expansive views of Lake Michigan, South Bar Lake, and on clear days, even the Manitou Islands.
Best Times to Visit
The trail is open year-round, though the best times to visit are spring through fall. In spring, wildflowers pop along the trail; in summer, the breeze off Lake Michigan keeps things cool; and in fall, the foliage lights up the woods in brilliant reds and golds. Winter hikes are possible too, though traction gear is often needed. But you will get a frozen type view of the lake.
