Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

About

Located along the northwest coast of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is one of those places that feels almost too beautiful to be real. With miles of sweeping Lake Michigan shoreline, massive golden sand dunes, lush forests, and charming small towns nearby, it’s a spot that offers something for every kind of explorer.

The crown jewel here is, of course, the dunes. Towering hills of sand that rise dramatically above the lake. Climbing to the top is a rite of passage for many visitors, and the panoramic views from the top are well worth the effort. From up there, the lake stretches endlessly into the horizon, and on clear days, you can even see the Manitou Islands in the distance.

Beyond the dunes, the park has a ton to offer. There are more than 100 miles of hiking trails weaving through dense woods, peaceful inland lakes, and historic areas. The Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive is a must-do, offering stunning overlooks and photo ops at every turn.

In the summer, the beach is the perfect place to cool off, with clear, refreshing waters. In fall, the landscape transforms with fiery foliage. In the winter there is cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails.

Whether you’re planning a quiet retreat, a family adventure, or a romantic getaway, Sleeping Bear Dunes is one of those places that sticks with you.
